How to record with a software instrument and musical typing in GarageBand
- Choose Track > New Track, select Software Instrument, and click Create
- Press Y to open the Library and pick an instrument sound
- Choose Window > Show Musical Typing
- Play notes with the A to K keys; Z and X change the octave
- Press R to record and play your part
- Press Space to stop
