How to fix the brush not painting in Photoshop

5 steps · Written for Mac. On Windows, use Ctrl for Command and Alt for Option.

  1. Click the layer you want to paint on and check it isn't locked
  2. Press Command-D to clear a selection elsewhere
  3. Press Q if Quick Mask is on
  4. Check the brush Opacity and Flow in the options bar aren't at 0%
  5. Check the foreground color isn't the same as the layer's color
