How to set value labels for a categorical variable in SPSS

6 steps

1. Click Variable View at the bottom
2. In the variable's row, click the Values cell and then its … button
3. Type 1 in Value and Male in Label, then click Add
4. Type 2 in Value and Female in Label, then click Add
5. Click OK
6. In Data View, choose View > Value Labels to see the labels instead of the numbers
